Internships

Are you a student interested in social justice?

Do you want to learn on-the-ground, grassroots organizing skills?

The Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (aka Poor People's Army) is dedicated to cultivating future leaders of activism to facilitate widespread change in their own communities and abroad. We offer several opportunities for internships.

We are looking for students interested in social and economic justice to take part in our Summer of Social Action program. This is a great opportunity to learn from seasoned leaders about organizing for economic human rights and be part of the movement to end poverty at home and war EVERYWHERE!

The Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign ( aka Poor People’s Army) is a Philadelphia-based international coalition committed to uniting the poor across color lines as the leadership base for a broad movement to abolish poverty. We work to accomplish this through advancing economic human rights as named in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, such as the rights to food, housing, health, education, communication and a living wage job.

Interns' primary responsibilities will center on preparations for, and participation in, the Poor People’s Army March on the RNC & DNC. Tasks will include managing communications technology and social media, getting students and other populations involved in our march, including connecting with local and national organizations and artists. Qualified applicants will be willing and able to work with a diverse range of families on the front lines of poverty and participate in political education sessions.

Priorities, focus, and length of each internship is developed with the intern and internship supervisor, based on the skills and desires of the person volunteering and the needs of the organization. We want to make the internship fun, exciting, and a powerful learning experience for you. Our interns have found their experience with PPEHRC to be “life-changing.” Over the past 30 years, interning with our organization has led many individuals to become leaders in public, private and non-profit sectors across the country and spanning various industries.

Participants in the summer internship program will live with PPEHRC host families in North Philadelphia. The program runs from July 8th to August 23rd but the actual dates of your attendance can be tailored to fit your availability.

All of our internships are unpaid but can be for credit or not for credit. Our internships are in-person (at our office) as well as some work to be done outside of internship hours. On some occasions, we onboard remote interns but this varies by position and individual circumstance. Poor People’s Army internship program operates on a rolling basis, accepting applications throughout the year. Students interning for multiple semesters are preferred.

Deadline to apply is June 15th.
